2023 ICAO Stocktaking on Aviation in Sector CO₂ Emissions Reductions

The 2023 Stocktaking will build upon the success of the 2022 ICAO Stocktaking which inspired the journey towards the ICAO long-term global aspirational goal for international aviation (LTAG) of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, agreed during the 2022 ICAO 41^st Session of Assembly, marking a significant milestone for the international aviation sector towards its decarbonisation.

While the LTAG Stocktaking events cover all aviation in-sector CO₂ reduction measures and innovations, including technologies, operations, fuels and cleaner energies to monitoring the progress towards the achievement of the LTAG, the focus this year will be on fuel and clean energy-related approaches, innovations and solutions, showcasing the latest information from States, industry and other stakeholders, in the lead up to the third Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in November 2023.

The 2023 LTAG Stocktaking will be followed by pre-CAAF/3 Policy and Finance Consultation Sessions to initiate the consultation among States, focusing on policy and finance matters, with the involvement of public and private financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders, to consider relevant elements of a global framework for aviation cleaner energy.

During the three-day event, a simultaneous exhibition (including a “SAF-LAB Exhibition”) will be held on-site at ICAO Headquarters, which will showcase various stages of the fuel-related supply chain, such as feedstock, processing, distribution and certification, as well as broader CO₂ emissions reduction innovations related to technology, operations and fuels, to foster a deeper understanding and wider view on the basket of measures to support the achievement of the LTAG.
