New Power-to-X Project in Portugal Transforms Municipal Waste-derived CO2 into SAF

A new project for a fully integrated industrial-scale Power-to-X facility at the Maia Energy Recovery Plant in Portugal (Waste-to-Energy, WtE) has recently been launched by a consortium composed of Veolia, Lipor (Intermunicipal Waste Management of Greater Porto), and P2X Europe GmbH & Co KG.

The project will allow the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the CO2 captured from the WtE plant’s residual carbon-rich gas combined with green hydrogen. In the first phase, up to 100.000 tons of captured biogenic CO2 will be recycled for the conversion into power-to-x fuels and ultimate upgrading into SAF and other chemical products.

As part of the highly innovative power-to-x project, the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technology can be integrated into the existing energy recovery plant, resulting in near-zero – or even negative – CO2 emission power generation, significantly improving the environmental and energy balances of municipal waste incineration.
